Air Conditioner Won’t Turn On? Check These 6 Things

Check your thermostat’s settings first.

Ensure that the thermostat is set to “cool” and that the intended temperature is lower than the room temperature. Make sure the fan is on or set to “auto.” The fan will only operate if the air conditioner is cooling air and if it is set to “auto.” The fan is programmed to operate constantly when the AC is “on”, even though no air is being cooled.

Check the area around the outdoor unit for plants and clutter.

As a result of landscaping, loose leaves, mud, and other materials blocking airflow through the exterior unit, your air conditioner may overheat and turn off. Ensure at least two feet of clearance around the unit and several feet of vertical clearance. Remove any obstructions to airflow. Outdoor air conditioners often discharge the most heat from the top section. Hence they require a lot of open space above them.
